Nagios Enterprise 4.0 Authorization cgi-bin/status.c access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Nagios Enterprise 4.0 (Log Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file cgi-bin/status.c of the component Authorization Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

status.cgi in Nagios 4.0 before 4.0 beta4 and 3.x before 3.5.1 does not properly restrict access to certain users that are a contact for a service, which allows remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information about hostnames via the servicegroup (1) overview, (2) summary, or (3) grid style in status.cgi. NOTE: this behavior is by design in most 3.x versions, but the upstream vendor "decided to change it for Nagios 4" and 3.5.1.

The weakness was released 05/06/2013 by Jonas Meurer as 714171 as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.debian.org. The public release happened without involvement of Nagios. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2214 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.
