A vulnerability was found in Palo Alto PAN-OS up to 7.1.4 (Firewall Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Monitor Tab. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity.

The weakness was released 10/18/2016 by Juan Sacco as PAN-57659/95895 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityadvisories.paloaltonetworks.com. The public release was coordinated with Palo Alto. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. This issue affects the management interface of the device, where an authenticated administrator could inject malicious JavaScript into the web interface.

Upgrading to version 5.0.20, 5.1.13, 6.0.15, 6.1.14, 7.0.10 or 7.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
