A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple watchOS up to 3.0 (Smartwatch Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the component libarchive. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4679 since 05/11/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

An issue existed within the path validation logic for symlinks. This issue was addressed through improved path sanitization.
