A vulnerability was found in Joomla CMS up to 3.6.3 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Registration. The register method in the UsersModelRegistration class in controllers/user.php in the Users component in Joomla! before 3.6.4 allows remote attackers to gain privileges by leveraging incorrect use of unfiltered data when registering on a site.
The bug was discovered 10/25/2016. The weakness was shared 10/25/2016 by Davide Tampellini as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at developer.joomla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8869 since 10/21/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Xiphos Research Ltd. and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading to version 3.6.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
