A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Shibboleth Service Provider up to 3.2.x. This affects some unknown functionality of the component LDAP Data Connector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 10/27/2016 by Jeffrey Eaton as secadv_20161027.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at shibboleth.net. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Shibboleth. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
A flaw in the implementation of the result cache in the LDAP data connector [1] in the attribute resolver can cause results for one search to be substituted for another search, including one associated with a different subject. Depending on the purpose of the search and the attributes involved, this can result in data associated with one user being substituted for another, with critical impact on connected systems, up to and including improper information disclosure.
Upgrading to version 3.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
