A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Lynx up to 2.8.8pre.4/2.8.9dev.8/2.8.9dev.9 (Web Browser). This affects some unknown processing of the component URL Handler. The manipulation of the argument hostname with the input value www.example.com? leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/03/2016 by redrain root as [oss-security] CVE request:Lynx invalid URL parsing with '?' as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
Lynx doesn't parse the authority component of the URL correctly when the host name part ends with '?', and could instead be tricked into connecting to a different host.
A public exploit has been developed by redrain root in URL and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The code used by the exploit is:
