The bug was discovered 10/18/2016. The weakness was disclosed 11/01/2016 by Dawid Golunski as MySQL / MariaDB / PerconaDB - Root Privilege Escalation Exploit as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-5617 since 06/16/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Dawid Golunski and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at legalhackers.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94165 (MySQL 5.5.x < 5.5.53 Multiple Vulnerabilities (October 2016 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 20027 (Oracle MySQL October 2016 Critical Patch Update (CPUOCT2016)).
