Details
A vulnerability was found in NVIDIA Graphics Driver up to 2.11.4.124/3.1.0.51 on Quadro/NVS/GeForce (Hardware Driver Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing in the library nvstreamkms.sys of the component Kernel Mode Layer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
For the NVIDIA Quadro, NVS, and GeForce products, NVIDIA GeForce Experience R340 before GFE 2.11.4.125 and R375 before GFE 3.1.0.52 contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvstreamkms.sys) allowing a user to cause a stack buffer overflow with specially crafted executable paths, leading to a denial of service or escalation of privileges.
The weakness was published 11/08/2016 by Oliver Chang with Google Project Zero (Website). The advisory is shared at nvidia.custhelp.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8812 since 10/18/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94576 (NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver 340.x / 341.x / 342.x < 342.00 / 375.x < 375.63 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370263 (NVIDIA Windows GPU Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.11.4.125 or 3.1.0.52 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
