A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component Open Type Font. The weakness was disclosed 11/08/2016 by Hossein Lotfi with Secunia as MS16-132 / SA69996 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-7210 since 09/09/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 125 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94633 (MS16-132: Security Update for Microsoft Graphics Component (3199120)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91301 (Microsoft Windows Graphics Component Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS16-132)).
Applying the patch MS16-132 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94633), SecurityFocus (BID 94030†) and Secunia (SA69996†). Further details are available at seclists.org.
