Virtual Hard Disk Driver in Windows 10 Gold, 1511, and 1607 and Windows Server 2016 does not properly restrict access to files, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "VHD Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 11/08/2016 by James Forshaw with Google Project Zero as MS16-138 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7225 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
