The bug was discovered 09/06/2016. The weakness was presented 11/07/2016 by Guang Gong with Qihoo 360 as Android Security Bulletin - November 2016 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at source.android.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6754 since 08/11/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1055.

A public exploit has been developed by Guang Gong in HTML/Javascript and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 62 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 264239 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2016-6754), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
