A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin 4.0.0/4.0.1/4.0.2 (Database Administration Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function CREATE of the file view_create.php of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in view_create.php (aka the Create View page) in phpMyAdmin 4.x before 4.0.3 allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an invalid SQL CREATE VIEW statement with a crafted name that triggers an error message.
The weakness was released 06/05/2013 by Maxim Rupp as PMASA-2013-6 as confirmed blog post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at phpmyadmin.net. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3742 since 06/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
By approaching the search of inurl:view_create.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67227 (phpMyAdmin 4.x < 4.0.3 XSS (PMASA-2013-6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12699 (phpMyAdmin Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability (PMASA-2013-6)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
