A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Cryptsetup up to 2:1. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Partition Unlock. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was published 11/11/2016 by Hector Marco as CVE-2016-4484: - Cryptsetup Initrd root Shell as confirmed talk (DeepSec). The advisory is shared for download at hmarco.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
The fault is caused by an incorrect handling of the password check in the script file /scripts/local-top/cryptroot. When the user exceeds the maximum number of password tries (by default 3), then boot sequence continues normally.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at hmarco.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The talk contains the following remark:
The issue can be easily fixed by stopping the boot sequence when the number of password guesses has been exhausted.
