A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 49 (Web Browser). This affects the function nsScriptLoadHandler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. A buffer overflow resulting in a potentially exploitable crash due to memory allocation issues when handling large amounts of incoming data. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 45.5, Firefox ESR < 45.5, and Firefox < 50.
The weakness was disclosed 11/15/2016 as MFSA 2016-89 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9066. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900015 (Debian DLA-752-1 : icedove security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 50 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
