Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple iOS 10/10.1 on iPhone (Smartphone Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component Lockscreen. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 11/17/2016 by Benjamin Kunz Mejri as VL-ID 2012 / 648680301 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at vulnerability-lab.com. The public release happened without involvement of Apple. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Due to the last updates to ios 10.0 and 10.1 there are some new features. When you process to say to siri `Hi Siri call George via Facetime` ... Siri will answer `I can't call the user`. Now you say again `call George via Facetime`. Next to that push and hold the middle of the display ... now a second button under the first siri call becomes visible with the already well known `Others` function. Push the button and the contact list opens. In that modus it is not possible to move inside the contacts because they are grey, but you can preview all the names and use the search as well. A full escalte is at that point not possible.
A public exploit has been developed by Benjamin Kunz Mejri and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at vulnerability-lab.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
The best possible mitigation is suggested to be Workaround.
