A vulnerability has been found in Relevanssi Premium Plugin 1.14.4 on WordPress (WordPress Plugin) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Import/Export. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 10/07/2016. The weakness was released 11/17/2016 by Glyn Wintle as Unserialization vulnerability in Relevanssi Premium could allow admins to execute arbitrary code (in some circumstances) (WordPress plugin) as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
If logged in as an admin on any site you can go to settings, Relevanssi Premium, import or export options. This is a text field that accepts a serialised PHP object. It is possible to submit a string that contains an evil encoded object that executes arbitrary code (if there are classes available with particular methods such as __destruct).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 1.14.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
