Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in K2 Plugin up to 2.7.1 on Joomla (Joomla Component). Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 11/19/2016 by Anti Räis as Joomla plugin K2 RCE via CSRF or WCI as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
The administrator panel of K2 suffers from arbitrary file upload which leads to arbitrary PHP code execution. An attacker could trick an administrator to upload a malicious file (PHP shell) and execute arbitrary PHP code using it. This functionality is available by default to users with administrator role (admin, super user), therefore limiting the attack surface to authenticated administrator users.
A public exploit has been developed by Anti Räis and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 105 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
