A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Atlassian Doxygen for Atlassian Confluence 1.3.0 (Atlassian Confluence Plugin). Affected by this issue is the function getTemporaryDirectory. The manipulation of the argument tempId with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 06/23/2016. The weakness was presented 11/20/2016 by Julien Ahrens as [RCESEC-2016-007] AppFusions Doxygen for Atlassian Confluence v1.3.0 getTemporaryDirectory() tempId Path Traversal/Remote Code Execution as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 18 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
