Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Siemens SIMATIC CP 343-1, SIMATIC CP 443-1, SIMATIC S7-300 and SIMATIC S7-400 (SCADA Software) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Session Cookie Handler. The manipulation of the argument siemens_ad_session with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (httponly). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The bug was discovered 11/21/2016. The weakness was published 11/21/2016 by Andrea Barisani as Web vulnerabilities in Siemens S7-300/S7-400/CP343-1/CP443-1 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-8672 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/04/2022). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:

The session cookie 'siemens_ad_session' is not protected by means of the Secure or HttpOnly flags. The Secure flag forces the transmission of a cookie only on HTTPS connections, its omission results in man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks being capable of intercepting the cookie, by forcing its transmission on a plain HTTP connection triggered for its domain.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 94460†). Similar entry is available at VDB-93741. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
