A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 1.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function wsvqa_read_header of the file westwood_vqa.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.

The weakness was disclosed 07/07/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.libav.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
