A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat up to 8.5.6/9.0.0.M11 (Application Server Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component HTTP/2 Header Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The HTTP/2 header parser in Apache Tomcat 9.0.0.M1 to 9.0.0.M11 and 8.5.0 to 8.5.6 entered an infinite loop if a header was received that was larger than the available buffer. This made a denial of service attack possible.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2016. The weakness was released 11/08/2016 as Fixed in Apache Tomcat 9.0.0.M13 as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tomcat.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-6817 since 08/12/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
