Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function CGeneratedContent::HasGeneratedSVGMarker. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 11/24/2016 by Berend-Jan Wever (SkyLined) as Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 MSHTML CGeneratedContent::HasGeneratedSVGMarker type confusion as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The advisory illustrates:
I did not find any code path that could lead to exploitation. However, I did not do a thorough step through of the code to find out if and how I might control execution flow upwards in the stack. Also, it appears trivial to have MSIE survive the initial crash by massaging the heap. It might be possible that other methods are affected by a similar issue and that further DOM manipulations can be used to trigger a more interesting code path.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
