Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 (Operating System). This affects the function tipc_msg_build of the file net/tipc/msg.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The tipc_msg_build function in net/tipc/msg.c in the Linux kernel through 4.8.11 does not validate the relationship between the minimum fragment length and the maximum packet size, which allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2016. The weakness was presented 11/28/2016 with Qihoo 360 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8632 since 10/12/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
