A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 49/50 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component data URI Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redirect vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-601. A web application accepts a user-controlled input that specifies a link to an external site, and uses that link in a Redirect. This simplifies phishing attacks. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/28/2016 by Alexander Infuhr as MFSA 2016-91 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9078. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1204.001 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95590 (openSUSE Security Update : Mozilla Firefox / Thunderbird and NSS (openSUSE-2016-1407)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169550 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2016:2994-1)).
Upgrading to version 50.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
