Guidance Software EnCase Forensic Imager/EnCase Forensic up to 7.10 ReiserFS Image heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Guidance Software EnCase Forensic Imager and EnCase Forensic up to 7.10. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component ReiserFS Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 11/28/2016 by Wolfgang Ettlinger with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as SEC Consult SA-20161128-0 :: DoS & heap-based buffer overflow in Guidance Software EnCase Forensic as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Wolfgang Ettlinger and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 52 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

Vendor: they will fix the issue later and are fine patching it after advisory release
