Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apache Subversion up to 1.8.16/1.9.4 (Versioning Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component mod_dontdothat. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was shared 11/30/2016 by Florian Weimer as CVE-2016-8734-advisory.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at subversion.apache.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8734. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
The attack takes advantage of three properties of XML (substitution entities, nested entities, and inline DTDs) that allow preparing an XML bomb -- a small block of XML that can require a significant amount of CPU resources or memory to process. An authenticated remote attacker can cause denial-of-service conditions on the server using mod_dontdothat by sending a specially crafted REPORT request. The attack does not require access to a particular repository.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97024 (Amazon Linux AMI : subversion / mod_dav_svn (ALAS-2017-794)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196880 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Subversion Vulnerabilities (USN-3388-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.17 or 1.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97024), SecurityFocus (BID 94588†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037361†). The entries VDB-105248 and VDB-107073 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
