Details
A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin up to 4.6.4/4.4.15.8/4.0.10.17 (Database Administration Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in phpMyAdmin. When the user does not specify a blowfish_secret key for encrypting cookies, phpMyAdmin generates one at runtime. A vulnerability was reported where the way this value is created uses a weak algorithm. This could allow an attacker to determine the user's blowfish_secret and potentially decrypt their cookies. All 4.6.x versions (prior to 4.6.5), 4.4.x versions (prior to 4.4.15.9), and 4.0.x versions (prior to 4.0.10.18) are affected.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was published 12/11/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9847 since 12/06/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96426 (GLSA-201701-32 : phpMyAdmin: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 4.6.5, 4.4.15.9 or 4.0.10.18 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96426) and SecurityFocus (BID 94524†). Similar entries are available at VDB-94066, VDB-94069, VDB-94070 and VDB-94071. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
