Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM HTTP Server 2.0.42/2.0.47 (Web Server) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component apr-util. The manipulation as part of a Environment Variable leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The IPv6 URI parsing routines in the apr-util library for Apache 2.0.50 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (child process crash) via a certain URI, as demonstrated using the Codenomicon HTTP Test Tool.
The bug was discovered 09/15/2004. The weakness was released 10/22/2004 with IBM (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0786 since 08/17/2004. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14765 (Fedora Core 2 : apr-util-0.9.4-14.2 (2004-308)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86678 (Multiple Apache Web Server Vulnerabilities prior to version 2.0.51).
Upgrading to version 2.0.51 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-1.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 5715. In this case the pattern |3A|/[ is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31460.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17382), Tenable (14765), SecurityFocus (BID 11187†), OSVDB (9994†) and Secunia (SA12922†).
