A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple watchOS up to 3.1.0 (Smartwatch Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Profiles. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 12/13/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/12/2016 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz with CXsecurity as HT207426 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7626 since 09/09/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue existed in the handling of certificate profiles. This issue was addressed through improved input validation.
