A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9/10/11 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was published 12/13/2016 by Scott Bell with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as MS16-144 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7202 since 09/09/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Security-Assessment.com and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95764 (MS16-144: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (3204059)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91300 (Microsoft Edge Cumulative Security Update (MS16-129)).
