A vulnerability has been found in Cryptocat up to 1.1.165 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was published 08/04/2012 by knowcryptocat as confirmed blog post (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.crypto.cat. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4109 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
