common/extensions/sync_helper.cc in Google Chrome before 28.0.1500.71 proceeds with sync operations for NPAPI extensions without checking for a certain plugin permission setting, which might allow remote attackers to trigger unwanted extension changes via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 07/09/2013 by Antoine Delignat-Lavaud (danguafer) with Google Security Team as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at googlechromereleases.blogspot.dk. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Google. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2868 since 04/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68970 (Debian DSA-2724-1 : chromium-browser - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121317 (Google Chrome Prior to 28.0.1500.71 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 28.0.1500.71 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
