Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in XenForo 1.5.x. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2016. The weakness was published 12/15/2016 by Vishal Mishra as XenForo 1.5.x Unauthenticated Remote Code Injection as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to overwrite arbitrary PHP variables within the context of the vulnerable application. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input in an HTTP cookie, thus allowing to read sensitive information from the XenForo database like usernames and passwords. Since the affected script does not require an authentication, this vulnerability can be exploited by an unauthenticated attacker.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Upgrading to version 1.5.11a eliminates this vulnerability.
