A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Quiz and Survey Master Plugin 4.5.4/4.7.8 on WordPress (Survey Software). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability (Stored). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity.
The bug was discovered 09/14/2015. The weakness was disclosed 12/15/2016 by Tom Adams as CSRF/stored XSS in Quiz And Survey Master (Formerly Quiz Master Next) allows unauthenticated attackers to do almost anything an admin can (WordPress plugin) as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Tom Adams in HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 457 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The code used by the exploit is:
<form method=\"POST\" action=\"http://localhost/wp-admin/admin.php?page=mlw_quiz_options&quiz_id=1\";> <input type=\"text\" name=\"question_type\" value=\"0\"> <input type=\"text\" name=\"question_name\" value=\"<script>alert(1)</script>\"> <input type=\"text\" name=\"question_submission\" value=\"new_question\"> <input type=\"text\" name=\"quiz_id\" value=\"1\"> <input type=\"submit\"> </form>
Upgrading to version 4.7.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
