Details
A vulnerability was found in NVIDIA GPU Driver (Hardware Driver Software) (version unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function DxgDdiEscape in the library nvlddmkm.sys of the component Kernel Mode Layer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
All versions of NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver contain a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgDdiEscape where a check on a function return value is missing, potentially allowing an uninitialized value to be used as the source of a strcpy() call, leading to denial of service or information disclosure.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2016. The weakness was published 12/16/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at nvidia.custhelp.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8820 since 10/18/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95370 (NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver 34x.x < 342.00 / 367.x < 369.73 / 367.x < 369.71 (GRID) / 375.x < 375.63 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
