A vulnerability was found in OpenSSH up to 7.3 (Connectivity Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Forwarded Agent Channel Handler. Untrusted search path vulnerability in ssh-agent.c in ssh-agent in OpenSSH before 7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary local PKCS#11 modules by leveraging control over a forwarded agent-socket.
The bug was discovered 12/19/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2016 by Jann Horn as release-7.4 as confirmed release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssh.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10009 since 12/19/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 7.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
