A vulnerability has been found in Samba up to 4.3.12/4.4.7/4.5.2 (File Transfer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ndr_pull_dnsp_name of the component NDR Parsing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 12/19/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2016 by Frederic Besler with Zero Day Initiative as ZDI-CAN-3995 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at samba.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2123 since 01/29/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
The Samba routine ndr_pull_dnsp_name contains an integer wrap problem, leading to an attacker-controlled memory overwrite. ndr_pull_dnsp_name parses data from the Samba Active Directory ldb database. Any user who can write to the dnsRecord attribute over LDAP can trigger this memory corruption.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96293 (openSUSE Security Update : samba (openSUSE-2017-11)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169460 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for samba (SUSE-SU-2016:3271-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.13, 4.4.8 or 4.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
