Details
A vulnerability has been found in Xen 4.6.x/4.7.x/4.8.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component VMFUNC Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
VMFUNC emulation in Xen 4.6.x through 4.8.x on x86 systems using AMD virtualization extensions (aka SVM) allows local HVM guest OS users to cause a denial of service (hypervisor crash) by leveraging a missing NULL pointer check.
The bug was discovered 12/21/2016. The weakness was published 12/21/2016 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-203 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org.
