Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.13 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function blk_rq_map_user_iov of the file block/blk-map.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The blk_rq_map_user_iov function in block/blk-map.c in the Linux kernel before 4.8.14 does not properly restrict the type of iterator, which allows local users to read or write to arbitrary kernel memory locations or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by leveraging access to a /dev/sg device.
The bug was discovered 12/28/2016. The weakness was published 12/28/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9576 since 11/23/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a authentication.
