Linux Kernel up to 4.5.0 XFS File System fs/xfs/xfs_attr_list.c resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file fs/xfs/xfs_attr_list.c of the component XFS File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple memory leaks in error paths in fs/xfs/xfs_attr_list.c in the Linux kernel before 4.5.1 allow local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via crafted XFS filesystem operations.

The bug was discovered 12/28/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/28/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9685 since 11/30/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102734 (CentOS 7 : kernel (CESA-2017:1842) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196683 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3187-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (102734) and SecurityFocus (BID 94593†). The entry VDB-93841 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
