Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component KVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
KVM in the Linux kernel before 4.8.12, when I/O APIC is enabled, does not properly restrict the VCPU index, which allows guest OS users to gain host OS privileges or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access and host OS crash) via a crafted interrupt request, related to arch/x86/kvm/ioapic.c and arch/x86/kvm/ioapic.h.
The bug was discovered 12/28/2016. The weakness was published 12/28/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9777 since 12/02/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
