Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 KVM out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component KVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

KVM in the Linux kernel before 4.8.12, when I/O APIC is enabled, does not properly restrict the VCPU index, which allows guest OS users to gain host OS privileges or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access and host OS crash) via a crafted interrupt request, related to arch/x86/kvm/ioapic.c and arch/x86/kvm/ioapic.h.

The bug was discovered 12/28/2016. The weakness was published 12/28/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9777 since 12/02/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95685 (Fedora 25 : kernel (2016-bbe98c341c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196686 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3190-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.8.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95685) and SecurityFocus (BID 94640†). Similar entries are available at VDB-94698, VDB-94699, VDB-95259 and VDB-96552. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
