QEMU Proxy Backend hw/9pfs/9p-proxy.c resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file hw/9pfs/9p-proxy.c of the component Proxy Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Memory leak in hw/9pfs/9p-proxy.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local privileged guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host memory consumption and possibly QEMU process crash) by leveraging a missing cleanup operation in the proxy backend.

The bug was discovered 12/29/2016. The weakness was shared 12/29/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is shared at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9916 since 12/08/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96684 (GLSA-201701-49 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276348 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2016-1b868c23a9)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96684) and SecurityFocus (BID 94729†). The entries VDB-94676, VDB-94726, VDB-94727 and VDB-94728 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
