Google Android Kernel Profiling Subsystem ring_buffer.c ring_buffer_resize integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (version unknown). This issue affects the function ring_buffer_resize of the file kernel/trace/ring_buffer.c of the component Kernel Profiling Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 01/03/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/05/2017 as Android Security Bulletin - January 2017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at source.android.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9754 since 12/01/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/27/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111850 (Photon OS 1.0: Libxml2 / Linux / Openssh PHSA-2017-0001 (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family PhotonOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196910 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3422-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (111850) and SecurityFocus (BID 95278†). The entries VDB-94929, VDB-94930, VDB-94931 and VDB-94932 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
