The bug was discovered 06/29/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/05/2017 by Roee Hay with X-Force as Android Security Bulletin - January 2017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at source.android.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-8467 since 10/05/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 190 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 264315 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2016-8467), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
