A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Synacor Zimbra Collaboration up to 8.6 (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Administration Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is integrity.
The bug was discovered 01/11/2017. The weakness was published 01/11/2017 by Anthony Laou-Hine Tsuei with Sysdream Labs as [CVE-2016-3403] [Zimbra] Multiple CSRF in Administration interface - all versions as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Synacor. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-3403 since 03/17/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Multiple CSRF vulnerabilities have been found in the administration interface of Zimbra, giving possibilities like adding, modifying and removing admin accounts.
A public exploit has been developed by Anthony Laou-Hine Tsuei in HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 322 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The code used by the exploit is:
