A vulnerability was found in WordPress (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the file wp-mail.php. wp-mail.php in WordPress before 4.7.1 might allow remote attackers to bypass intended posting restrictions via a spoofed mail server with the mail.example.com name.
The bug was discovered 01/11/2017. The weakness was released 01/15/2017 by Security Team with WordPress Security Team (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5491 since 01/14/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1211 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
By approaching the search of inurl:wp-mail.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96606 (WordPress < 4.7.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175955 (Debian Security Update for wordpress (DSA 3779-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.7.17, 3.8.17, 3.9.15, 4.0.14, 4.1.14, 4.2.11, 4.3.7, 4.4.6, 4.5.5, 4.6.2 or 4.7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
