Details
A vulnerability was found in icoutils 0.31.0/0.31.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the extract_group_icon_cursor_resource function in b/wrestool/extract.c in icoutils before 0.31.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (process crash) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted executable file.
The bug was discovered 03/22/2017. The weakness was released 01/14/2017 by Choongwoo Han as [SECURITY] [DSA 3765-1] icoutils security update as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-5333 since 01/10/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99904 (EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : icoutils (EulerOS-SA-2017-1059)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
