A vulnerability was found in Squid Proxy up to 3.3.7 (Firewall Software). It has been declared as critical. client_side_request.cc in Squid 3.2.x before 3.2.13 and 3.3.x before 3.3.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted port number in a HTTP Host header.
The weakness was disclosed 07/13/2013 by Alex Rousskov and Saran Neti with The Measurement Factory/TELUS Security Labs. as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Squid. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4123 since 06/12/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by king cope and been published 2 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68898 (FreeBSD : squid -- denial of service (30a04ab4-ed7b-11e2-8643-8c705af55518)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166349 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Squid (openSUSE-SU-2013:1435-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13612.
