A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome up to 55 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Blink. Blink in Google Chrome prior to 55.0.2883.75 for Linux and Windows, and 55.0.2883.84 for Android allowed possible corruption of the DOM tree during synchronous event handling, which allowed a remote attacker to inject arbitrary scripts or HTML (UXSS) via a crafted HTML page.
The bug was discovered 12/01/2016. The weakness was published 01/19/2017 by Abdulrahman Alqabandi (xisigr) with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-5208 since 05/31/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading to version 55.0.2883.75 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
